Brian Rice is an alum of Alabama A&M University who now—as an engineer and entrepreneur—is trying bring more value to his hometown of Ensley of Birmingham, Alabama. For Rice, that means making the longstanding vacant buildings in Ensley better suited for business. However, he has run into manually placed barriers trying to get his goals completed. All of the delays to his success, he believes, is because of the demographic of his neighborhood, where many residents have the same skin tone as him.
